5 Insider Strategies to Find Your Perfect AI Newsletter Niche and Scale to $5k/Month

The micro niche Dilemma

gm Ultrapreneurs.

I'm trying to become what I call an "Ultrapreneur." This means I want to start a fun business that I really enjoy. I want to be happy with my work and decide how I do things. To do this, I'm making a newsletter about AI. I want to grow this newsletter and make $5,000 each month. I will document this journey along with the wins and obstacles I face.

Deciding the niche was a tough decision for me.

In the previous post we drilled down into hot selling newsletters, their niches and the economics.

The Micro Niche Dilemma

Choosing the right niche is the foundation of a successful newsletter.

Finding the perfect niche is like solving a complex puzzle. It requires careful consideration of multiple factors to create a cohesive picture.

The ideal niche lies at the intersection of three key factors:

  1. What you're good at

  2. What you love doing

  3. What makes money

For me, this translates to:

  1. Marketing, automation, and research

  2. Experimenting with AI tools for various projects

  3. Hyper-specific niches within broader categories

Hyper-specific Niches are more levels deep into the General category of niche perform the best. For example: (1)Cars> (2) Luxury cars > (3) Luxury (4) Sedans > (5) Mercedes Sedan > (6) Mercedes S class

For instance, my ‘base’ category would be AI, and I want it to be B2B since I'm an entrepreneur and my writing style would resonate best with entrepreneurs.

Now that we've identified these factors, let's explore how to drill down into a specific niche.

Drilling Down for My Niche

What if you could find the perfect balance between passion, expertise, and profitability?

Brainstorming on different levels within the AI niche:
AI > Business with AI > Using AI for Marketing in Business > Automating Marketing using AI for Businesses

Further boiling down could lead to:
SEO, Prospecting, Gen AI - Audio/Video, Copywriting, etc.

The question now is, how far should we narrow our focus? One idea is to niche down to social media marketing automation using AI for businesses, or perhaps content marketing using AI. Within these niches, I could incorporate my interests in Twitter automation, Reddit automation, video generation, and SEO. However, this might exclude prospecting and outreach, which I also enjoy.

How can I strike the right balance? Should I even try to include everything?

Expert Insights on Niche Selection

Most entrepreneurs choose their niche all wrong.

To gain more perspective, I consulted with AI assistants Claude and 4o. Here's what they had to say:

Claude suggested:

"Consider this approach: Choose a primary focus, but allow for related subtopics. For example:

Main Niche: 'AI-Powered Marketing Automation for B2B Companies'

By framing it this way, you can explore various AI applications in B2B marketing while maintaining a cohesive theme."

Chatgpt 4o provided some pros and cons of niching down versus keeping a broader focus:

Pros of Niching Down:

  • Specialization: Establish yourself as an expert.

  • Targeted Audience: Easier to build a dedicated and engaged audience.

  • Less Competition: More specific niches often have less competition.

Cons of Niching Down:

  • Limited Scope: This might exclude some of your interests.

  • Market Size: Smaller market potential.

Pros of a Broader Niche:

  • Diverse Content: Ability to cover multiple topics.

  • Larger Audience: Potentially larger audience base.

  • Flexibility: Freedom to explore different areas.

Cons of a Broader Niche:

  • Dilution: Risk of not being perceived as an expert in any one area.

  • Competition: More competition in broader categories.

Recommendations

  1. Test the Waters:

Start with a broader niche combining elements you love (e.g., Automating Marketing using AI across various channels).

  2. Track engagement and feedback to see which sub-niches resonate best with your audience.

Content Pillars and Newsletter Structure

This is exactly what I was thinking. The way to move forward is to test the waters without narrowing down too much. I'll keep gathering feedback as I go.

I'm planning a single newsletter that will mix:

  • Curated content from news sources, YouTube, podcasts, and summarized social media (Reddit/Twitter Lists)

  • My own insights and opinions

I also thought about including:

  • A side hustle section (though it might not fit perfectly with the main topic)

  • A deep dive section about specific AI tools

I'm considering splitting these into three different emails:

  • Saturdays: Main newsletter

  • Later on: Two more emails (one for deep dives, one for side hustles)

For now, I'll focus on 3 main content pillars:

  1. Social Media Automation

  2. Content Generation

  3. Outreach

It's easier to expand later than to scale back, so I'll start with this approach.

To measure success, I'll use analytics to see which sections get the most engagement. Link clicks in each section could be a good metric to track.

Next steps: Decide on branding, how often to send the newsletter, and create a template.

Since it's been almost 100 days of me learning Spanish on Duolingo, I would like to end this by saying hasta luego, emprendedores!
