Can a Newsletter Really Make $1M? My 262-Day Challenge
Without working 80-hour weeks or sacrificing your sanity

Let’s address the elephant in the room, what’s up with the $1 million AI newsletter.
I know many of you are wondering how a newsletter could possibly make that much money. Let's break it down.
The newsletter industry is booming and experts predict it'll keep growing fast in the coming years.
For those new here, Ultrapreneurs is where I'm documenting my journey to build this $1 Million AI project.
First, let's see if this is really possible and how.
There have been some big success stories in the newsletter world:
Industry Dive: Sold for $525M after 10 years
MorningBrew: Sold for $75M after 5 years
The Hustle: Sold for about $27M after 4 years
Milk Road: Made millions in just 10 months
The Peak: Sold for $5M after 3 years
The AI niche is tough, but some have done really well:
Zain Kahn's AI newsletter Superhuman got 200,000 subscribers in less than 4 months
Rowan Cheung's The Rundown reached 150,000 subscribers in 4 months
Ben Tossel's Ben's Bites grew to 90,000 subscribers in 7 months
So, we know it's possible. But that's not the only reason I'm doing this.
I believe in decentralization - not relying on big corporations to reach your audience.
Emails let you communicate directly with your readers. Plus, I love the freedom of building something that really helps people. And most importantly, I love tech, marketing, and smart entrepreneurship.
Ultrapreneurs
This is my Build in Public Newsletter. I'll be sharing all the messy failures, surprising wins, and challenges I face while building this project.
My goal is to connect with successful solopreneurs and efficient entrepreneurs who've found smart ways to build big businesses without burning out. I'll share their best practices and methods through videos, blogs, and podcasts.
Right now, it's just me, but I've made a list of amazing entrepreneurs who build in public: https://twitter.com/i/lists/1821018158423052665
I'll keep adding to this list and interviewing these folks. I've got a few interviews lined up already.
What I'll be sharing:
Detailed breakdowns of what worked (and what didn't)
Interviews with successful newsletter creators and AI entrepreneurs
Tutorials on tools and techniques I use in my business
Long-term, I want to track different projects and show how they're built, like Starter Story and Indie Hackers do. We'll build a community of smart, unique ultrapreneurs who can help each other out and share their success stories.
The plan is to build an AI empire, starting with our own distribution and later expanding into agency work, courses, and products. We'll test the newsletter first and evolve from there.
Milestone 1:
I’m creating an AI repository of Marketing Automation tools, and I'll launch 1-2 of my own SaaS businesses. I'll focus on three main areas:
Social Media Automation
Content Generation
Outreach
My goal is to make $5000 a month by April 18, 2025 (in 262days) - that's about 10,000 subscribers. It's tough in the B2B world, but doable.
I'll review and add tools to the database and create a search engine for them. We might even develop an AI that can suggest solutions to specific problems. For branding, we'll give the top AI models their own characters and stories.
In the future, I plan to create more of my own SaaS products and maybe an AI aggregator like Poe.com or Merlin.ai with cool features.
How Ultrapreneurs and the AI Project Work Together:
These two projects naturally complement each other. When I write about building the AI newsletter, it helps other entrepreneurs who are interested in AI and newsletters.
This content serves multiple purposes - it helps me learn, builds my personal brand, markets the AI newsletter, and provides valuable info for my audience. It's a win-win-win situation.
There are different ways to make money with newsletters:
Newsletter + Digital Product:
Build a list of 100,000 subscribers
Sell ads in each newsletter ($390,000/year)
Create and sell a course ($625,000/year)
Total: $1,015,000/year
Sponsorship Model:
Send 5 newsletters per week
Sell primary and secondary ad spots
With 100,000 subscribers, potentially make $1,001,000/year
B2B Lead Generation:
Focus on generating leads for B2B companies
Send 2 newsletters per week
With 70,000 subscribers, potentially make $1,071,000/year
Courses and Coaching:
Use weekly newsletter to build trust
Sell high-ticket course ($999)
With 50,000 subscribers, potentially make $1,003,100/year
The AI newsletter space is risky right now. Lots of new newsletters pop up every month, and many fail. But there are success stories too, like the ones I mentioned earlier.
To succeed, you need two things:
Unique content
Unique monetization strategies
That's why I'm creating a newsletter with unique content (branded characters and their stories) and unique strategies like AI marketing courses and SaaS apps.
